THE ALMIGHTY (El-Shaddai) Part 1

When God is ready to manifest His glory, He acts sovereignly and operates on His own timeline, unconstrained by human limitations; His power and wisdom reign supreme. The word “Almighty” is one of the most powerful and awe-inspiring names that describes the power and sovereignty of a person or a nation. This word is attributed to God’s above totality, meaning there is no power greater than God’s. It speaks of His supreme authority, infinite power, and sovereign rule over all creation. Rooted deeply in both the Old and New Testaments, the name conveys not only God’s might but also His protective and providential role in the lives of His people.

Meaning of THE ALMIGHTY

The term “Almighty” is a Hebrew word “, El Shaddai”, meaning “God Almighty.” This word first appears in the book of Genesis 17:1, when God confirms His covenant with Abram: “And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram and said to him, ‘I am the Almighty God; walk before Me, and be thou perfect.’” — Genesis 17:1 (KJV) Here, God introduces Himself as the One who has the power to fulfil His promises, even when human ability fails. This also describes his mightiness that whatever you do, wherever you are and whoever you are, he has the overall power to change destiny. When you know and believe in the mighty power of God, you feel fulfilled and assured that he has your back.

This word also means God’s SOVEREIGN POWER

This word “The Almighty” proves God’s absolute power over all things—nature, nations, and history. In the book of Job, which wrestles deeply with the nature of God and suffering, “The Almighty” is used several times, but for the purpose and because of our time, I will dwell on a few verses:
“I know that thou canst do everything, and that no thought can be withholden from thee.” — Job 42:2 (KJV) “Behold, God is mighty, and despiseth not any; he is mighty in strength and wisdom.” — Job 36:5 (KJV). These verses corroborate that even in suffering, Job recognises the uncontested authority of the Almighty. It also means that whatever you are going through right now, God is capable and is there to help.

The Almighty as PROTECTOR AND PROVIDER

In the book of Psalm 91, one of the most comforting passages of Scripture, the Almighty is portrayed as a refuge and fortress: “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the Most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.” — Psalm 91:1 (KJV) This verse reveals the tender side of God’s might; He is not only powerful but also a place of safety for those who trust Him. You can not trust and believe in him and not be under his protection; he will protect you from the hands of every enemy. In the book of 2 Corinthians 9:8 “And God is able to make all grace abound toward you; that ye, always having all sufficiency in all things, may abound to every good work” – 2 Corinthians 9:8 (KJV) “The young lions do lack, and suffer hunger: but they that seek The LORD shall not want any good thing.” _Psalm 34:10 (KJV)
These verses show us that the Almighty will never forsake us when it’s time to provide for our needs; these provisions are not just for survival, but for fruitful service. The book of Exodus 16:4 shows the supernatural of the Almighty by raining down manna for the Israelites in the wilderness. “Then said the LORD unto Moses, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law, or no.” _Exodus 16:4 (KJV). This verse gives the assurance that the Almighty can provide supernaturally when there is no earthly supply. All you require is to walk with him and abide by his laws; then He takes care of the rest.

CONCLUSION

When we look at New Testament especially in Revelation, God is seen as the supreme ruler over the final judgment and the new heaven and earth: “‘I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty.’” — Revelation 1:8 (KJV). In this passage, the Almighty is described as the eternal King who will bring justice, restore creation, and reign forever. This means above him there is no other power, beneath him there is no other power; he reigns supremely over all kingdoms. Believing in “The Almighty” is trusting in a God who has the power to intervene in history, to redeem, to judge, and to fulfil His promises. His might is not arbitrary but is guided by His love, justice, and faithfulness. The Almighty is not a distant impersonal force, but a living deity, and a loving father. He is the God who upholds the universe and engages intimately with His people. His power inspires every being, His presence brings peace, and His promises give hope. As believers, acknowledging God as “The Almighty” strengthens our faith and deepens our worship of him.
